The Life and Times of Col. James Fisk, Jr

The Life And Times Of Col. James Fisk, Jr by R. W. McAlpine chronicles the life of one of the era’s most flamboyant financiers. Fisk rises from a Vermont peddler to Wall Street titan through bold speculation and high-profile alliances with Daniel Drew and Jay Gould. The book traces his ascent, his control of the Erie Railway, and his audacious campaigns in cotton, railroad finance, and even gold markets. It covers the Erie War and Fisk’s public feuds with Vanderbilt, his lavish taste, charitable acts, and his dramatic murder by Edward S. Stokes in 1872. The author presents Fisk as a complex figure—ambitious, generous toward friends, yet ruthless in business, sometimes courting controversy for his larger-than-life schemes. The narrative blends biography, economic history, and sensational anecdotes, also offering biographical sketches of other key figures such as Vanderbilt, Drew, Gould, and Stokes. By presenting fact with clear prose and measured judgment, the work aims to illuminate how Fisk shaped American finance and public life in the nineteenth century.
