Master John Dee was an advisor to England’s Queen Elizabeth I. Dee, an iconic and fabled figure, was a scholar in what he called the mathematical arts and sciences. These included everything from navigation, architecture, and astronomy to the application of arithmetic and geometry in supernatural, eternal, and divine things. He was deeply involved in the currents of 15th century Renaissance thought and was no stranger to the royal courts of Europe. A pious man, he aspired to heal the religious schisms of his time.
This book traces the arc of this famous polymath’s studies, travels, and accomplishments. It includes accounts of his education, his famous lecture in Paris, his travels throughout Europe, and of course his conversations with angels. Also included are introductions to his most famous writings and to his activities as mentor to New World explorers.
It concludes with a section on some recent and exciting scholarly research into a previously unrecognized aspect of Dee’s likely involvement in British colonization efforts in North America.
