This 5.625 x 8.125 inch, 544 page hardcover book is the 1887 edition of this title as indicated by that date on the title page and matching the copyright date on the following page. This copy is in very good condition with a bit of time and shelf wear showing to the publisher's textured maroon cloth covers with elaborate gilt designs and lettering on front panel and spine. There is wear showing to the corners . . . and particularly the bottom two corners . . . but overall the binding is clean and tight and the gilt lettering and design still quite vivid. The interior has two previous owner's inked names on the endpapers and the frontispiece portrait of Beecher is protected by a tissue guard. There is a touch of foxing to the frontispiece but beyond that virtually no foxing can be seen . . . with the text block clean and in near fine condition. Beecher was one of the most prominent American Christians and anti-slavery crusaders of his time and this book gives an extended account of his early life, his part in the abolitionist movement, the Civil War, and his later career in politics. 544 pages.…
