“When somebody says 'beautiful' about Key West, you should really take it with a grain of salt ... the 'beauty' is just the light, or something equally perverse.” – Letter from Elizabeth Bishop to Robert Lowell, January 1 1948.
Light Over Islands: Key West Stories
It’s the light in Key West, as Elizabeth Bishop pointed out. Anything can be transformed by its brilliance. In these stories, collected over 30 years of living in Key West, a couple quarrel and find reconciliation, a solitary tourist mourning a death finds surprising company, Obama is elected, a Christmas party is held under a mango tree, a boat sails to the Bahamas in the teeth of the wind. An accident lands a young woman in the hospital - will she survive? A tree is felled, leaving an aging couple aghast at losing its protective shade. How much of life here is to do with the extraordinary light of Key West, transforming all it falls on, making the ordinary beautiful, the impossible possible, allowing for a continuing series of revelations?
