A Light from the Shadows

This is not a biography of J. R. R. Tolkien. Although it contains many biographical details, A Light from the Shadows is primarily a commentary on the distinctly Catholic framework of Tolkien’s writings – shaped by his experiences as a scholar, army officer, husband, and father. Each of these aspects of his life helps to unlock his unique perspective on his own work.

In this book, Fr Michael Halsall takes the reader on a journey through Middle-earth, alongside characters who vividly embody the key themes of Tolkien’s literary vision: the urgent need to re-enchant our narratives, the ongoing struggle between good and evil, the question of what it means to be virtuous, and the inescapable reality of death – and what may lie beyond it – for every human being.

A Light from the Shadows is essential reading for every Tolkien or Lord of the Rings fan, and for anyone interested in the Catholic influence on one of the greatest fantasy writers of all time.
