About this Item
A very rare book. It has 64 pages and is 4 1/2 inches tall and 3 1/4 inches wide. What's most remarkable is the condition of the book. I've rated it Very Good because it really is in very good condition, even putting aside its age. For example, as you can see in the photographs, the gilt lettering on the front is still quite bright and the gilt design on the back is just the same. The design on the front and back is also in very good condition. There are only a few speck-sized marks or stains on the covers, quite inconspicuous, as you can see. There's only one slightly rough area where the cloth is worn just a bit. You can see that near the top right corner of the front. And is it possible that there isn't any rub-through at the corners or edges? Yes. There isn't any. This is a genuinely antiquarian book. I don't see a date in it. Someone is asserting that it was published in 1855. I'm skeptical that the book indicates that. But it does certainly have the feel of the book that was written around that time. The interior of the book is in very good condition. It opens up on to the title page. On the front inside cover there is a penned 'Cong (two illegible initials) Library, Seymour, No. 149'. I suppose that indicates that it was once residing in a library but there aren't any attachments or stamps or anything like that. The title page has a little bit of soiling. The next page is titled Explanation Of Scotch Words and there are three pencil marks under three words. I turned over every page and can say that there is only one other tiny pencil mark to be found in the book. I can also say that the pages of the book are remarkably clean. Page 13 (of course) has a smudge at its bottom white margin. And you'll find a few small spots here and there but the majority of pages are spotless. They are also in very good condition, not particularly worn. I saw only one corner crease. And importantly, they are tight and the text is very solidly bound. The book is bound in two places along the gutter. The only place you would realize that is between the front inside cover and title page, even though it is not really cracked there, but the top of the page before the first binding can be lifted up a little bit. That's about it. A nifty looking little book in very nice condition. Seller Inventory # 001289
