Limitations of the Slow Strain Rate Test for Stress Corrosion Cracking Testing, MTI Publication No. 39

Reports on an investigation initiated in response to the revelation that the slow strain rate test technique, widely used in a variety of industries for evaluating stress corrosion cracking, does not find cracking in some environments where it is known to occur under field conditions and in other tests such as U-bend. Identifies the alloy environment systems in which the test technique produces anomalous results, test variables that must be controlled to make the test results applicable to metals used in the chemical process industries, the limitations of the test technique, and the program support necessary to resolve remaining questions. The investigation combined computer and hand searches of the literature, questionnaires, and phone contacts. Annotation copyright Book News, Inc. Portland, Or.
