Alan Strode Campbell Ross (1907-1980), Professor of English Language at Birmingham, 1948-51, and of Linguistics, 1951-74, has a more general celebrity for his invention of "U" and "Non-U" in a 1954 article, "Linguistic Class-Indicators in Present-Day English", developed in Noblesse Oblige (with Nancy Mitford and others, 1956).
