Reviews
Set in the Plantagenet England of Edward II, this story centers on three characters: the lovely Maria Rendell; her husband, Phillip; and Richard, Earl of Sussex, half brother to the king. These are turbulent times, and the incompetent Edward must simultaneously wage war with the marauding Scots and also attempt to keep his feuding barons under control. Against this background is a love story of very believable characters. Phillip has always valued his freedom to travel, even as a married man. When he eventually leaves on a three-year journey to the Holy Land, Maria, feeling abandoned, succumbs to the charms of Richard Plantagenet. In her first novel Johnson has produced a fine combination of history and romance. Patricia Altner, Bolling Air Force Base Lib., Washington, D.C.
