"The musical terms are defined in ways that make sense to students, and difficult concepts are explained succinctly and with musical examples... Kerman has done a wonderful job in writing about music in ways that are engaging. He has selected works that are both significant and intriguingEit is simply the best text I have used." "The level of the material in the Beyond Europe segments seems perfect for students in a course like this. It's intelligent and engaging. I like the fact that the authors not only describe musical cultures and practices, but also raise issues such as cultural colonialism, syncretism, homogenization of pop musics, and globalization." "With Kerman's new listening packages, we are treated to the most up-to-date, acclaimed performances of music from all periods."
