The Listener Volume 2

The Listener by Caroline Fry presents a collection of moral essays, parables, and reflective sketches about education, virtue, and domestic life. Framed as a listening diary, the volume probes how mothers, teachers, and women shape character, urging self-scrutiny and responsible stewardship of time, talent, and resources. Through a sequence of vignettes and narratives—covering topics such as School Education, Maternal Education, Good Humour, Self-Examination, Conversation, and character studies like Cousin Mabel, Goodman Hodge, and Janet Bevoir—Fry examines fashionable upbringing, social ambition, and the perils of worldly pursuit. Her writings advocate humility, piety, and a practical Christianity that places spiritual aims above status or wealth. Music, Sabbath observance, and domestic discourse are treated as domains where virtue or folly reveals itself, and she warns against ill-humour, vanity, and dress worship. The work blends anecdote, social critique, and moral instruction to guide readers toward disciplined living, compassionate action, and faithful devotion.
