Lister as I Knew Him. This item is unavailable.Lister as I Knew Him

"Lister as I Knew Him" provides an intimate and authoritative portrait of Joseph Lister, the visionary surgeon who revolutionized medicine through the introduction of antiseptic techniques. Written by John Rudd Leeson, who served as a student and house surgeon under Lister, the work offers a rare firsthand perspective on the life, character, and professional struggles of the man who transformed surgery from a dangerous necessity into a safe and scientific practice.

The narrative delves into the daily realities of nineteenth-century medical wards, illustrating the profound impact of Lister's discoveries on patient survival and the eventual acceptance of germ theory. Leeson masterfully balances personal anecdotes with historical significance, painting a picture of a humble, dedicated, and deeply principled individual. Readers will find a compelling exploration of the challenges Lister faced in convincing a skeptical medical establishment of the necessity of cleanliness and chemical disinfection. "Lister as I Knew Him" is not only a tribute to a monumental figure in science but also a vital document for those interested in the history of medicine and the evolution of modern healthcare. It captures the essence of a pivotal era when scientific inquiry began to conquer the ancient scourge of surgical infection.
