ENGLISH DESCRIPTION
Was Frida Kahlo really a great artist? What makes her work important? Why is she one of the most influential artists of our time? Is it possible to take a fresh approach to her paintings?
Helena Chávez Mac Gregor poses these questions in an effort to put aside Kahlo’s status as a cultural icon and examine her works through a contemporary lens. In this insightful essay, she analyzes ten of the artist’s paintings, suggesting that, rather than their traditional interpretation as autobiographical, they be viewed more as self-portraits. Doing so reveals them in a fresh perspective, as fleeting snapshots of Kahlo’s evolving life experience.
Maggie Nelson, Ocean Vuong and Cristina Rivera Garza’s literary musings on motherhood, illness and sisterhood; the futuristic visions of China Miéville; the antiracist politics of Fe/derico Navarrete and Yásnaya Elena A. Gil; Bruno Latour, Isabelle Stengers and Vinciane Despret’s explorations of the non-human world; and the queer and feminist subversion of Johanna Hedva and Sara Ahmed are interwoven with the essayist’s personal anecdotes in this grand verbal tapestry that offers a new interpretation of the work of Mexico’s most famous artist.
