Literature Models to Teach Expository Writing

The reading/writing connection allows for demonstration that enhances your K-5 curriculum. The books serve as models for illustrating and mastering the six basic expository skills needed for lifelong communication and for state assessments: Description, Explanation, Leads and Endings, Cause and Effect, Comparing and Contrasting and Fact and Opinion. All mini-lessons provide practice in the levels of knowledge required for ongoing, as well as, deadline writing.

Susan Anderson-McElveen and Connie Campbell Dierking specialize in the application of the writing process, and they create materials for writing instruction in the K-5 classroom.

They have co-authored Literature Models to Teach Expository Writing and Teaching Writing Skills with Children's Literature. Connie is also the author of Growing Up Writing.

Connie Campbell Dierking is originally from northeast Kansas. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and a Master's degree in Special Education, both from Kansas State University. During the past 24 years, Connie has experienced the joys of teaching kindergarten, second grade, third grade, and exceptional education students. She is involved in the Pinellas County Center for Learning Student Achievement Institute, a research and development program that supports classroom research in Best Practices. She is also a writing demonstration teacher for Pinellas County Schools.

Susan Anderson-McElveen is a fourth-grade teacher. She serves as a writing demonstration teacher for Pinellas County, conducting workshops for her school and the district.
