Illustrated by T. R. Macquoid. (185 x 140) pp. 48. With full colour frontispiece and colour-illustrated borders throughout. Text printed with elaborate brown borders. Fully interleaved. Original dark red cloth binding with gild bird motif and title with gilt title on spine and gilt fore-edges. Chromolithography is bright. Owned by a child whose name has been written, and erased, on front fly leaf. No foxing. Overall VERY GOOD condition. Cloth. Condition: Good. T. R. Macquoid (illustrator). First edition. A scarce, first edition of this colourfully illustrated children's tale written in verse, by M. Betham Edwards. First edition. Scarce work. Bound in the publisher's original blue blind-stamped cloth. A charming children's tale surrounding the courtship between a red and a blue bird, taking place in the forest. This work was adapted from a German story with no known author. Compiled and altered by Matilda Betham Edwards, a prolific poet, novelist and children's author. Wonderfully illustrated with a frontispiece and hand coloured page adornments, by T. R. Macquoid. Bound in the publisher's original blue blind-stamped cloth. Externally, very good, with some rubbing to the extremities and a little loss to the backstrip head. Split to the tail of the front joint. Hinges have been reinforced. Ink inscription to the verso of the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound, with tape reinforcing the gutter of page 42-3. Pages are bright and clean, with the odd handling mark. Good. book.
