Item description from seller

Reprint. Octavo (20.5cm); orange cloth-covered boards, with titling stamped in black on front cover; pictorial endpapers and pastedowns; dustjacket; [26]pp; illustrations in color and black and white throughout. Light shelfwear, with occasional pencilling to text; Very Good. Dustwrapper has modest shelfwear, with chips to upper rear hinge and lower spine panel, tiny tears along spine ends and extremities, and faint dampstain to front panel verso; Very Good. The racist children's classic is set in India, and even the earliest versions of the book contained illustrations that clearly drew upon negative colonial stereotypes. Langston Hughes noted that Little Black Sambo was a work of the "pickaninny variety.amusing undoubtedly to the white child, but like an unkind word to one who has known too many hurts to enjoy the additional pain of being laughed at". Despite revisions, the work demonstrates racial stereotypes and slurs. [83764].
