"Although I did not recognize it at the time, I came to Canada hurt most immediately by the death of my granddaughter...also by an accumulation of losses over the years. For as long as I can remember, Canada has been in my mind a place of sanctuary a nation of peacekeepers. For someone seeking a "Walden", what better credentials could a location afford? I also imagined the Maritimes to be a place of unspoiled natural beauty a place where I might find old-fashioned civility and values. I was not disappointed."
