Little Heiskell (Paperback or Softback)

"Little Heiskell" is a charming classic of American children's literature set in the historic town of Hagerstown, Maryland. The story centers on the eponymous character, a legendary iron weather vane who has stood guard atop the town's market house since the late 18th century. During a particularly cold and snowy Christmas Eve, the brave Little Heiskell miraculously comes to life, stepping down from his high perch to wander the streets and participate in the festive spirit of the season.

Isabelle B. Hurlbutt's narrative captures the magic and whimsy of local folklore, blending a rich historical setting with a heartwarming holiday tale. As Little Heiskell interacts with the townspeople and experiences the world below his roof, readers are treated to a story that celebrates community, history, and the wonder of childhood imagination. This work remains a beloved piece of regional Americana, offering a unique glimpse into the traditions and legends of early 20th-century storytelling. Its focus on a local icon transformed into a hero of a magical adventure makes it a delightful read for those interested in historical fiction and timeless seasonal stories.
