PreS-K-This version of the familiar folktale departs from the traditional telling in several ways. A rooster and a mouse live with the little red hen and lazily refuse to help do the chores necessary to turn a grain of wheat into a loaf of bread. When, in turn, the little red hen won't share the fruits of her solitary labor, the shirkers learn their lesson and, in this story, get a second chance. Next time the hen finds a grain of wheat, both rooster and mouse are there to help and to enjoy the delicious reward. The narrative is simple and serviceable, though not particularly rhythmic. Bold, uncomplicated illustrations, all full-bleed double-page spreads, depict an inviting country setting. Effective use of line and texture combine with rich color to appeal to young viewers. (Some may wonder, though, how the little mouse managed to lift a large watering can.) A recipe for whole-wheat bread, clear but not as easy as suggested, is appended. An acceptable choice for those who prefer a happy ending for all.-Marie Orlando, Suffolk Cooperative Library System, Bellport, NY
