Gr 1-4-Granny is a hip senior citizen who drives a red Lamborghini. When Mother sends Ronnika to visit with homemade soup because Granny has the flu, she issues the usual caution about talking to strangers. Alas, good intentions disappear when the young teen encounters handsome Barry "Slick" Wolfe, whose mellow rap tricks her into delaying her errand. Granny's attempt to overcome Slick fails, and she ends up in his belly. Ronnika follows, but the two are rescued by a courageous tree trimmer. Not only does Granny end up with a silver wolf coat, but she also has enough wolf roast and wolf chops to serve for a week. Lisa Campbell Ernst's Little Red Riding Hood (S & S, 1995) and Susan Lowell's Little Red Cowboy Hat (Holt, 1997) also feature unconventional grandmothers. The different spin here is that these characters are African Americans.
