An interesting publication issued during Mackenzie's period of exile in the United States, and prepared while working as a custom house clerk in New York City. It reflects his disgust with corruption in the Van Buren administration. The book became a best-seller but publication was suspended, by court order, after 50,000 had been put on the market. (Kilbourn, The Firebrand). ". Mackenzie was prominent in the Canadian rebellion of 1837, fled to the States as a fugitive with a price on his head. In accordance with New York usage he was made much of, and given a place in the customs. In an unused attic he discovered a trunk left by Jesse Hoyt when he went out of office years before. The trunk was full of letters from prominent politicians - B. F. Butler, John Van Buren, Gov. Marcy, Edwin Croswell, Jas. Gordon Bennett, Martin Van Bren, Silas Wright and others.
