Lives of the Three Mrs. Judsons

Three women, one extraordinary missionary legacy. Lives of the Three Mrs. Judsons traces the remarkable stories of Ann Hasseltine Judson, Sarah Boardman Judson, and Emily Chubbuck Judson, each of whom shared the life and work of pioneering American missionary Adoniram Judson in Burma. Arabella M. Willson follows their journeys from early faith and education to marriage, travel, illness, bereavement, and demanding missionary service far from home. Ann endures war, imprisonment, political danger, and failing health while helping sustain the mission through its darkest years. Sarah, already experienced in missionary life, continues her work among the Karen people, teaches, travels, raises a family, and perseveres through repeated personal loss. Emily, a gifted writer and poet, brings a different temperament and literary voice to the story, accompanying Judson during his final years and recording his last illness and death. Drawn from letters, recollections, and biographical accounts, Willson presents a distinctly nineteenth-century portrait of Christian devotion, courage, sacrifice, and perseverance. Beyond the story of one famous missionary, this volume restores attention to three women whose labor, resilience, and personal sacrifices were inseparable from the history of the mission they served and the communities they sought to reach across decades of profound historical change.
