111, (24)p. Softcover in original orange paper binder. 29 cm. A typed carbon copy for a musical about Elizabeth Keckley in Washington as a seamstress as she tries to make her way to Mrs. Lincoln and prosperity. Label of a Literary Representative (Laura Wilck, in Sherman Oaks) mounted on front cover. The 24 unnumbered pages at the end contain the lyrics (but not Margarent Bonds" music) for the numerous songs. We found nothing online about this play under the title "Lizzie" but OCLC locates one copy (Ohio State) of a 1972 manuscript titled "Black woman in the White House" which is probably some later iteration of the same work. It is listed as having 111 pages, as does this (without the song lyrics). Google Books locates an item by Vilan from 1972 titled "Black woman in the White House: A Play in Three Acts" which it identifies as having 222 pages but offers no preview or further description. The play in this manuscript is in two acts. We don't know how the play had evolved between 1969 and 1972. Neither the OCLC entry nor the Google Books listing mentions Margaret Bonds for music. In any event, this seems to be a play that was never produced. Online information identifies Vilan as having been born in Smyrna which still had a large Greek population when he was born in 1909.
