Local History and the Teacher

First published in 1967, Local History and the Teacher explores the opportunities and the difficulties presented by the study and teaching of historical aspects of the local environment. The author treats the development and value of local history studies in the work of English Schools, and discusses in detail the varied sources of local history. He describes a variety of studies involving local history which were undertaken by teachers and students. This book will be of interest to students and researchers of local history and to teachers concerned with environment studies.

Robert Douch was appointed to the newly created post of Lecturer in Local History in the University of Southampton Institute of Education in 1951 to encourage the study and teaching to local history in schools and colleges. He has worked in, and with, a great variety of educational institutions, and has published books and articles in the field of local history. At the time of the first publication, he was Senior Lecturer in the Department of Education, University of Southampton, UK.
