Locks and Lavatories The Architecture of Privacy

Privacy in the home is a relatively new concept and, until the Georgian era, even kings were given little private space. This enjoyable and well-illustrated guide introduces the archaeological, architectural and historical evidence for the spatial organisation of palaces, houses and gardens from prehistory to the modern day. Sections on different rooms, household technology, furnishings and servants, for example, reflect changing standards and tastes and the often wide chasm between reality and the idealised home.
