Large quarto, unpaginated. In used condition, the title-page missing from the 1846 log, loss to some pages, original boards with morocco backstrips, worn and marked. These are the handwritten logs of the barque Mary Ann for her 1846 and 1847 voyages from London to Madras via the Cape of Good Hope and back, each containing the names of the ship's company and its passengers, followed by the daily log recording aspects of life at sea. Under the command of William Darke, the voyages from London to Madras via South Africa took 5 months - not for the faint-hearted! In May 1847 a letter from the grateful passengers to Darke was printed in the South African press, which was later followed by a testimonial reporting that they had presented him with a 'piece of plate'. In late 1848 the Mary Ann left England for South Australia under the command of William Darby but Darke returned as captain for the Australian voyages in 1850 and 1852.
