FIRST EDITION. Bound in more modern cloth; interior clean. Very small stamp of the Inner Temple on the title page. First edition of the author's textbook of English grammar according to the principles of formal logic, an exposition that language should lead to the logic and not logic to the language. Latham (1812-1880) studied at King's College, Cambridge, then went on to study philology on the Continent before being appointed professor of English language and literature at University College, London. There he published a number of works, including a revision of Johnson's Dictionary. He also entered medical school and became a lecturer on forensic medicine and materia medica.
