Color pictorial map. Full sheet measures 29" x 21.5". Folds into original 9" x 4" envelope. This vibrant, eye-catching map was made for the Festival of Britain in 1951. After World War II, the British government funded the Festival of Britain to celebrate the UK's achievements in arts, science, and technology, and inspire confidence in the resiliency of the nation. This colorful map acts as a pictorial guide to London's landmarks with a whimsical twist. In addition to iconic buildings like Buckingham Palace and Westminster Abbey, the map aims to highlight the history of London's culture--portraits of notable Londoners such as John Ruskin and John Bunyan appear in relevant locations; a street barrel piano organ and its operator appear on Albany road and a couple does the "Lambeth Walk" Dance by Lambeth Road; Arrows direct visitors to football clubs and tennis stadiums outside the city. Underground railway lines and stations are marked in red. The borders depict various ceremonies involving the Royal Guard, and heraldry from twelve London districts. The verso contains exhibition guides, a smaller transit map of London and suburbs, and lots of information on locations in and around London. The map is in good condition; wear along fold lines has caused several small breaks in the paper, but the image remains clear and vibrant, minor foxing on verso title section only. Printed by George Philip & Son, LTD for the News Chronicle Publications Department.
