A collections of puzzles that would have teased the contemporaries of Jane Austen, the Brontes and Byron on cold winter evenings and teas on the vicarage lawn (well perhaps not Byron?). Circa 1825; ex-owner has written "1821-2?" on bottom of title page. Price on title page is "two shillings and sixpence". Slate-blue paper-covered boards with faded and rubbed brown paper backstripe from which the paper title paste-on is missing. The edges, corners and joints are worn and rubbed; corners bumped; linen backing just visible through rubbing of joints. Page-edges grubby and unevenly cut. 198 pages of infuriating puzzles; solutions at back; no illustrations (none apparently missing and none referred to). Rare. Book still tight and contents entirely legible and reasonably clean apart from odd stains, sparse and light foxing, mainly in the margins.
