The Long Journey to Cleveland

From award-winning author Rudolf Ruder comes The Long Journey to Cleveland, an extraordinary memoir that brings to life the true story of his parents’ survival, love, and resilience during and after World War II. This deeply moving account follows one man’s journey from the unimaginable horrors of Auschwitz and Dachau to the hope of a new beginning in America. More than just history, it is a powerful tribute to faith, courage, and the unbreakable strength of the human spirit, a story that transcends time and leaves a lasting impact on every reader.

The book chronicles the lives of Simon Ruder, a Jewish tailor from Lvov, Poland, and Maria “Marile” Häusl, a young German girl from Bavaria, whose paths crossed in the aftermath of the Holocaust. Simon endured years in brutal concentration camps, including Plaszow, Gross-Rosen, Auschwitz, and Dachau, surviving through faith, resilience, and sheer determination. Meanwhile, Maria grew up under Nazi indoctrination, participating in the Hitler Youth and witnessing the devastation of Allied bombings. Despite their vastly different backgrounds, they eventually met, married, and emigrated to Cleveland, Ohio, where they rebuilt their lives.

• Survival and Resilience: The memoir highlights the endurance of Simon through unimaginable suffering and Maria’s navigation of a childhood shaped by propaganda and war.
• Love Across Divides: Their story exemplifies how love and human connection can transcend historical and cultural divides.
• Historical Insight: The book provides a dual perspective on World War II, offering both the experience of a Jewish Holocaust survivor and a German civilian child, enriched with archival records, survivor testimonies, and family documents.
• Immigrant Experience: It also explores the challenges and triumphs of Holocaust survivors and refugees starting anew in postwar America.

Ruder combines memoir, historical documentation, and personal reflection, weaving together family memories, original documents, and survivor accounts to create a deeply personal yet historically grounded narrative. The book is not a textbook but a story of faith, hope, and humanity in the face of adversity.

Readers and critics have noted the book’s emotional depth and its ability to humanize history, making it a compelling addition to Holocaust literature and memoirs of World War II. It serves as both a tribute to the author’s parents and a reminder of the resilience of the human spirit.

In summary, "The Long Journey to Cleveland" is a moving, historically rich memoir that captures the horrors of war, the complexities of human experience, and the triumph of love and survival against all odds
