The Long Path: First Steps

The Long Path: First Steps launches the Paths of the Ancients series with a heart-pounding tale of survival in a prehistoric world. Ryn, a 15-year-old hunter, inherits leadership of his tribe after his father’s death in a mammoth hunt. When the Dying Grasslands turn to frost and the aurochs vanish, starvation looms. Guided by elder Ysmera’s vision of geese flying south, Ryn leads thirty souls—hungry, weary, and doubtful—toward an unknown future.

The journey begins with a dire wolf’s attack on their camp. Ryn’s spear sinks into its chest, marking his shift from boy to leader, though fear still clings to him. As they trek, the tribe battles hyenas, adopts a wolf pup named Fen, and finds signs of other clans—carved trees, a red feather, wave-like scratches. Nature tests them with frozen earth and falling stars, yet hope flickers in stories of kin by the sea.

Near the coast, a saber-toothed cat ambushes them, only for the Wave Clan—led by Korr and his fierce niece Lirra—to join the fight, slaying the beast together. Welcomed to their seaside village, Ryn learns fishing from Lirra, whose strength challenges him, while Ysmera’s tales of ancient unity with the Wave Clan’s elders weave their tribes closer. Amid fish feasts and net-weaving, Ryn finds purpose and connection.
