Patrick awakens and slips out to the porch of the lakeside house where he has been staying with his sister, parents, and grandparents. One by one, each person quietly joins Patrick as he looks through binoculars and listens for loons. And one by one, each person goes back inside, leaving Patrick to watch as a group of loons dives into the water, calls out, and flies away. This simple, evocative picture book captures the magic of a family’s quiet morning together as well as the wonder of the birds’ sudden appearance. Full of light, Wakelin’s sensitive pencil-and-watercolor illustrations are at their best in portrayals of animals in and around the lake. Varying perspectives keep the double-page spreads from growing monotonous, and the restrained palette is well suited to the early morning setting. Preschool-Grade 2. --Carolyn Phelan
