Loose And Humorous Songs

Wit with its sleeves rolled up. Songs that flirt, tease, and tip their tankards: traditional drinking songs with a wink. Sing, sip, and laugh tonight. Loose And Humorous Songs gathers humorous song lyrics from the world Thomas Percy helped to preserve: eighteenth century British songs shaped by street, tavern, and drawing-room alike. Here are bawdy British ballads and punchy refrains; ribald satire in verse set beside country humour, all tuned for reading aloud or sharing in company. The range runs from couplets to longer strophic tales, each built for memory and mischief. Part folk song anthology, part comic verse collection, it captures the rough-and-ready pleasures of popular song without losing the poise of Georgian era poetry. It is as much a document of everyday speech as it is entertainment. Percy, best known for the Reliques of Ancient Poetry, stood at the crossroads where oral tradition met print, and this songbook shows why that moment matters: it keeps living voices on the page, with rhythms and turns of phrase that later writers would echo. Readers who love Robert Burns song poems will recognise the same knack for candour and melody, while performers will find a songbook for performers with plenty to deliver on stage or in session. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike, and classic literature for students of British verse and culture.
