Lord Jim by Joseph Conrad, first published in 1900, is a psychological and moral novel exploring themes of guilt, redemption, and the struggle for personal honor. The story follows Jim, a young British seaman with dreams of heroic adventure. His life takes a dramatic turn when, during a crisis at sea, he abandons a damaged ship, the Patna, along with the rest of the crew, leaving hundreds of passengers behind. Though the ship is later rescued, Jim is publicly disgraced and stripped of his officer's certificate. Haunted by guilt and shame, Jim seeks redemption and a chance to prove his courage. He eventually finds work in a remote Southeast Asian trading post, where he earns the respect of the local people and begins to rebuild his reputation. However, when another crisis forces him to make a moral decision with devastating consequences, Jim must once again confront the ideals and failures that define him. Narrated largely by Marlow, a sea captain and recurring figure in Conrad s work, Lord Jim is a profound exploration of conscience, identity, and the human desire to live up to one s own ideals.
