trade paperbacks, seven volumes in slipcase. Various pages. Volume Four has a crease to the front cover. Other than that flaw, all volumes are in fine condition and have never been read. A great copy of the epic story for Tolkien collectors. Extra shipping will be applied to the set. In 2001 Collins issued The Lord of the Rings in seven volumes which is how Tolkien originally wanted the story to be published. Unwin understandably balked at the idea and until this edition ? printed in paperback and hardcover ? was published, Tolkien?s original concept was never released. This makes the normally bulky books much easier to read. The Appendices are now in a separate volume which makes more sense than printing them at the end of an already long book. This edition was only issued once as a prelude to the upcoming movies which had not yet been released.

This is a single-volume edition of J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy, in which the hobbit Frodo and his elfish friends get swept up in a mighty conflict with the dark lord Sauron (who owes much to proud Satan in Paradise Lost), the monstrous Gollum, the Cracks of Doom, and the awful power of the magical Ring. The book's characters--good and evil--are recognizably human, and the realism is deepened by the magnificent detail of the vast parallel world Tolkien devised, inspired partly by his influential Anglo-Saxon scholarship and his Christian beliefs. (He disapproved of the relative sparseness of detail in the comparable allegorical fantasy his friend C.S. Lewis dreamed up in the Chronicles of Narnia, though he knew Lewis had spun a page-turning yarn.) It has been estimated that one-tenth of all paperbacks sold can trace their ancestry to J.R.R. Tolkien. But even if we had never gotten Robert Jordan's The Path of Daggers and the whole fantasy genre Tolkien inadvertently created by bringing the hobbits so richly to life, Tolkien's epic about the Ring would have left our world enhanced by enchantment. --Tim Appelo

We use primarily Canada Post to ship, but will ship via courier for customers in Canada.
*** If Canada Post is threatening, or is on strike, then we will have to use FedEx for shipping, which carries a higher cost. (As of May 26, 2025, Canada Post is in the process of negotiating their contract, and is beginning strike action. All orders will be shipped using FedEx until further notice.)
