A matched three-volume hardback set of The Lord of the Rings, in the original pictorial dust jackets. Published by George Allen & Unwin, London. The Second Edition (the 1965 text incorporating Tolkien's own corrections), Fifth Impression, 1970, across all three volumes.

Bound in the publisher's original red cloth, with gilt lettering to the spines and the ring-and-eye device blocked in red on the front boards. Top edges stained red. Each volume complete with its fold-out map tipped in at the rear. Pictorial dust jackets to all three volumes in the dull greenish-grey design, with the ring-and-eye motif to front panels and "Revised Edition" printed at the foot. Jackets clipped on the front flap, retaining the publisher's "Fifth Impression, Revised Second Edition" notation on the rear flap.

Condition is Very Good throughout. Bindings square and tight, gilt bright, boards clean with only the lightest handling wear at the extremities. Jackets are bright and unfaded, with no chipping or tears, showing only minor rubbing at the spine ends and corners. Pages clean and fresh, with no inscriptions or markings, other than pencil bookseller numbers.

The Revised Second Edition is the definitive Tolkien text. After the first edition appeared in 1954?55, Tolkien substantially revised the work for the 1965 Ballantine paperback (to address US copyright issues) and these revisions, together with the new Foreword to the Second Edition, were carried into the Allen & Unwin Revised Second Edition of 1966. All subsequent English-language editions descend from this revised text. A handsome, uniform set, well-suited to a reading collector or as the foundation of a Tolkien shelf.
