The Lords Baltimore (Classic Reprint)

Founding Maryland reveals how a bold plan and a new colony shaped colonial America.

This historical narrative follows Cecil Calvert’s efforts to turn a royal dream into a settled province. It weaves political maneuvering, daring voyages, and the beginnings of Maryland’s communities into one clear story. In readable, tightly focused chapters, the book traces the voyage of the Ark and the Dove, the early governance of the colony, and the careful balancing of settlers’ needs with those of Indigenous peoples. It also places Maryland’s founding in the larger context of 17th‑century English politics and family ambition, showing how a family’s influence shaped a province.

• Detail-filled account of the first voyage and the settlers who built the colony
• Insights into governance, land grants, and early colonial policy
• Discussion of relations with Native peoples and with rival English interests
• Context on the Calverts’ role in broader political struggles of the era
