The Lords And The People: Or, The Principles Of Civil Government Illustrated, Under The Connexion Of Religion With The State, And Nobility In Britain: Wherein The Causes Which Led To The Dissolution Of The Grecian Independence, And The Fall Of The Roman Empire, Are Applied To The Policy Of Theis a dense 19th?century British political–theological tract defending the Protestant Establishment and the unity of church and state against Catholic emancipation and liberal reform. It argues that establishment provides the moral order, security of the monarchy, and protection of property, and it condemns dissent and “free conscience” libertinism as threats to civil stability. The author portrays papal power as a secular danger, and the Roman Catholic Church as an adversary seeking control over Ireland and Britain. The work casts the peerage and the Crown as essential guardians of tradition and constitutional balance, and it critiques reformers, Russell, and O’Connell as threats to national unity. It prescribes coercive but pragmatic measures for Ireland, including subsidies to priests and state?backed education in Celtic languages, to fortify Protestant literacy. The tract is rich with classical and canonical authorities, historical exempla, and appendices used to argue that a tripartite estate—King, Lords, and Commons—offers the best defense of civil liberty and Christian government.
