Hardcover, dark blue cloth, worn title on spine. Jacket with small edge tears. Previous owner's stamp on FEP. Interior with no markings. An excellent copy of a classic work of sinology. van Gulik was a consumate polymath scholar of Chinese and Japanese culture, a Dutch diplomat, author of the Judge Dee crime fiction and a history of sex in ancient China, wherein the graphic passages are translated from classical Chinese to Latin. He studied the Chinese lute with a master teacher This is the second edition of the 1941 original.
