Synopsis
St. Louis Brews, Second Edition: The History of Brewing in the Gateway City features hundreds of historical images, a full chronology of the city's long brewing history, fascinating profiles of more than 125 local breweries, and capsules on the craft, regional, and nineteenth-century breweries. Available again in its second edition, the book begins with St. Louis' earliest brewing history-starting in 1809, the date of the city's incorporation, when beer was sometimes cooled in dug-out canoes-and tells the story of how St. Louis came to be one of America's foremost beer towns. That includes detailed backgrounds on St. Louis' beer barons, including Adolphus Busch and Eberhard Anheuser, a look at the city's golden age of brewing during the Belle Epoque, the impacts of Prohibition, and the InBev takeover of Anheuser-Busch in 2009. Finally, it gives the reader an up-to-the-moment look at the city's astonishing craft brewing scene, which began to blossom in 2009 and is now attracting national attention. Everyone in St. Louis loves to drink beer; they may love to drink it all the more knowing the city's rich backstory in beer and brewing.
About the Author
Stefene Russell is St. Louis Magazine's Culture Editor. In her nine and half years with SLM, she's written about St. Louis' first psychic detective squad; Little Bohemia, a Depression-era precursor to Gaslight Square; poet David Clewell; jazz musician Hamiet Bluiett; and the late gospel-singing husband and wife duo Slim and Zella Mae Cox. She lives in the St. Louis Place neighborhood and probably drinks more wine than beer. Kevin Kious was born in St. Louis but grew up in a dry town in central Illinois. He got revenge by becoming a brewery historian. Today he lives in Collinsville, IL with his wife Patty and three spoiled cats. Donald Roussin has been a resident of the St. Louis area since the mid-1960s, except while attending Southeast Missouri State University, in Cape Girardeau, graduating Suma Cum Laude in 1976 with a BA major in pre-law, and a minor (surprise) in history. Donald has been actively collecting breweriana and researching local brewery history for the past 40 years. He has co-authored over two dozen articles between the ABA Journal, The NABA B.C. and Beer Cans & Brewery Collectibles magazines; and is a co-author of two books, Breweriana: American Beer Collectibles (Shirebooks), plus, St. Louis Brews: 200 Years of Brewing in St. Louis, 1809-2009, (Reedy Press).
