[Louis Riel] Photo of North-West Rebellion Officers 2nd Battalion Queen's Own Rifles of Canada

An 8x10 inch, mounted albumen photograph, likely commissioned by the four officers of the 2nd Battalion of the Queen's Own Rifles of Canada within the photo, who all proudly display their regimental military accouterment. All sitters are documented and identified in time and place on the original printed mat, with the photo being mounted onto a 11.25 x 10 inch card. Previously separated into three parts, consisting of the mounted photo, the printed mat [w. insigna & regimental motto "IN PACE PARATUS (In peace prepared)] and the original paper covered cardboard backer, which has an ink notation on verso "William Campbell (father of Fred W.)" and the rubber stamp of the framer "Alfred Bouchton Picture Framer . Ave. Toronto". Backer is toned w. stains and loss to paper at edges, mat is toned w. tide line water stains along lower edge, photo mount is toned - mostly verso, with a tide line water stain to lower left corner and pencil notations to verso, photo is toned w. glue residue to some outer edges. A strong and detailed historical image of these 19th century Canadian military men. One of the sitters, Captain William Campbell Macdonald, went on to be promoted to Colonel and Brigadier of the 1st Canadian Training Brigade during WWI. The 2nd Battalion of The Queen's Own Rifles of Canada is the oldest continuously serving infantry regiment in Canada, formed pre-confederation, on April 26, 1860. It was originally established as the Second Battalion, Volunteer Militia Rifles of Canada.
