This publication began in 1785 and ran for almost two years. The periodical is known for having one of the earliest tributes to Robert Burns and his genius. The topics of the essays and articles range greatly. Henry Mackenzie was the editor and main contributor of the periodical. Mackenzie was a lawyer, known for his writing, including another periodical, 'The Mirror', which ran from 1779 to 1780. He was also a join founder of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.
