The Lover of My Lover (Paperback)

Paperback. The Lover of My LoverAmaira Bernard has spent four years building a future with Sam Xiong. She has worked hard, planned carefully, and loved him with the steady confidence of someone who assumes love is patient enough to wait. She assumed wrong. When a new journalism assistant named Freya Laurent joins Sam's newsroom, nothing dramatic happens. No grand gestures. No declarations. Just two people discovering, slowly and without intention, how easy it is to be understood by someone who is paying full attention.Amaira notices the shift before she can name it. A laugh she no longer earns. A quality of ease she stopped providing somewhere in the middle of building their future. Messages sent at eleven at night between two people who have run out of reasons to stop talking.By the time she understands the full shape of what has happened, she is sitting across a table from the woman her boyfriend fell in love with, and finding, to her own confusion, that she cannot bring herself to hate her. This is a novel about what love requires when you stop paying attention to it. About the difference between presence and proximity. About the quiet, ordinary way that two people can grow a space between them large enough for a third person to fall into.It is also about what Amaira finds on the other side of losing everything she planned for.She did not expect that part at all.
