102 Pages. Tight book with light wear to the top spine area of the cover. Interior pages are flawless. This is the original 1896 edition. The Riverside Literature Series, 1886-1901, consisted of 159 numbered Titles plus 21 Extra Numbers using the letters A thru U. There were four Double Number titles, referred to as Leaflets From Standard Authors -- Longfellow Leaflets (F), Whittier Leaflets (G), Holmes Leaflets (H), and this book Lowell Leaflets, is Extra Double Number O. The complete list of series titles is on the front and back endpapers. The four Double Number books bound in linen sold for 40 cents. There are 68 Lowell Poems and Prose Passages in this book plus a Biographical Sketch of James Russell Lowell. He died in 1891 at Elmwood, Cambridge in the house where he was born in 1819. His early life was spent in Cambridge and he sketched many scenes there and some appear in this volume. Elmwood, The Foot-Path, Summer Storm and more. The most striking sketch of all is the portrait of Oliver Wendell Holmes who was his Lowell's senior by 10 years. The sketch appears with Lowell's poem To Holmes on His Seventy-Fifth Birthday. Included are more than 40 drawings. Lowell was a student at Harvard graduating in 1838. He was appointed in 1855 to the Belles Letters professorship at Harvard, previously held by Longfellow. In 1877 Lowell went to Spain as Minister Plenipotentiary and in 1880 he was transferred to England as Minister Plenipotentiary at the Court of St. James. He returned to the United States in 1885 and the rest of his life was passed quietly in his Cambridge home. In 1880 he finished a careful revision of his complete works which were issued in ten volumes. Seller Inventory # 15113
