Item description from seller

Hardcover. Full brown leather. A rough but very old binding, with raised cords, blind ruled borders on the covers. Leather chapped and corners bumped, spine creased. Binding tight. Two stub pages at the front and rear, where folded blanks are sewn (which is to say that there's nothing missing). The dedicatory poems by Ben Jonson is present, but detached, sitting in its proper place after the Life of Lucan. Unpaginated. Early ownership name on the title page, "John Stanley." The 10 books of Lucan translated into English. Following that is a 4 page dedication to King Charles, followed by Thomas May's original poem, a continuation of the history, in 7 books. May's original work fills the final third of the volume, with the translation from Lucan taking up the first two thirds. Pages are somewhat wrinkled from age and there is some foxing and some darkening to the outer edges of the pages, from nearly 4 centuries of people thumbing through. May first published a translation of Lucan in 1626. It was quite successful. This edition, the second edition, also contains the first printing of May's 'Continuation.' Book measures a mere 3.75 x 5.75 inches. Please email with questions or to request photos.…
