Four volumes from E. V. Lucas with frontispieces by Persis Kirmse. All uniform in size with page counts varying from 100 to 139. All in original dust wrappers, all with owner's names on fep or frt pastedowns, all with beautiful tissue-guarded frontispieces by assorted artists. 'The More I see of Men' is the first of the set. Lucas collected the most suitable of his writings, in prose and verse, which deal with dogs, explaining his title in the lines: "The more," said one, "of men I see, The more do dogs appeal to me." Book two "Out of a Clear Sky" Lucas brings together his essays and fantasies dealing with birds; and all lovers of birds, tam and wild, should find many things to please them. Book #3 'If Dogs Could Write' is again focused on dogs. The principle essay is nominally the work of an Aberdeen terrier who analyses the relationship of dog and owner. Lastly, the fourth volume 'and such small deer,' which is a broken line from a speech by Edgar in Shakespeare's King Lear. Herein we find essays and fantasies about animals, from mice to elephants.…
