Lucia: Her Problem

Lucia: Her Problem by Amanda Minnie Douglas. Lucia, later known as Lucy Garth and then Lucy Thorndike, is introduced as a beautiful, spirited daughter in a stern Dedham household. The novel follows her growth from a pampered girl under her father’s rigid control and a censorious stepmother to a married woman whose quest for beauty, wealth, and social standing collides with duty, fidelity, and family. As Lucy marries Warren Thorndike to escape poverty and a dreary existence, she enters a world of luxury, intrigue, and conflicting loyalties, where she is drawn toward two men—Vaughan Marchmont, a suave antagonist, and Paul Rutherford, a principled suitor who embodies integrity. The narrative traverses marriages, separations, and moral awakenings, revealing Lucy’s inner struggle between ephemeral pleasures and higher, selfless love. After betrayals, tragedies, and the revelations of hidden pasts, Lucy seeks a humble, constructive life, reconciles with her father, and ultimately returns to a life of purpose with the aid of steadfast friends. The story culminates in rebirth and the possibility of redemption through suffering, forgiveness, and renewed family bonds.
