Composer Paul Hindemith's Ludus Tonalis is a piano solo work devoted to counterpoint, tonal organisation and piano playing. Written for pianists interested in twentieth-century classical repertoire, it combines a Praeludium, a cycle of twelve fugues with interludes, and a concluding Postludium. The source identifies the music as advanced to difficult, making it particularly relevant to pianists exploring Hindemith's writing through study, practice, analysis and performance.
The music is presented in standard notation for solo piano and is organised around three listed components: Praludium, Fugen und Interludien, and Postludium. The twelve fugues form the structural heart of the work, while the opening and closing movements create an ingenious frame. The Postludium is formed by turning the Praeludium upside down and reading it backwards, giving the complete work a striking sense of architectural unity.
Written in 1942, Ludus Tonalis transforms Hindemith's technical ideas into music shaped by imagination as well as formal discipline. Its contrapuntal writing provides rich material for studying fugue, tonal relationships and musical construction at the keyboard, while the changing character of the twelve fugues offers variety across sustained practice and performance. Hindemith's original visual conception even associated each fugue with a different lion, reflecting the individual musical character he perceived within the cycle.
