Altmann, a Brazilian liberation theologian, evaluates the relevance of Martin Luther's reformation theology for contemporary life. Altmann finds Luther's doctrine of justification by faith especially liberating, and he discovers contemporary ideas about Christ, scriptural interpretation, the church, society, politics, and economics. Altmann includes a penetrating analysis of some of the issues confronting the church, particularly in Latin America. Luther emerges as a contradiction, wedded to the medieval inheritance of hierarchical social views, but nevertheless a spokesperson for important changes in society among other issues. Seminary and academic libraries will find this useful.
