Reviews
Gr 4-6--Delightful creative lyrics set to toe-tapping, familiar melodies make this tape a winner. The lyrics are fun and bouncy, while including a plethora of scientific information and vocabulary about mammal classifications, ecology, and biomes. Some of the mammal classifications taught and the tunes set to scientific terminology include: Monotremes and Marsupials/ "Aura Lea"; Carnivores and Pinnipeds/ "She'll be Coming Around the Mountain"; Hoofed Mammals/"Home on the Range"; Rodent-like Mammals/"Irish Washerwoman"; Toothless Mammals/ "Yellow Rose of Texas"; Bats/"Take Me Out to the Ball Game"; Insectivores/"Camptown Races"; and Ecology/"Sweet Betsy from Pike." The audiotape can be used, or the instructor may play the melody with the sheet music supplied for each song. While the lyrics are enchanting for elementary students who will enthusiastically sing the scientific information, older students will be too self-conscious to enjoy singing the amusing lyrics. The technical qualities of this program are outstanding, and its use as an instructional tool for alternative learning styles is exciting. The accompanying text is an excellent teacher resource. A quality addition to elementary science units.-Kathy Dummer, Newcastle Middle School, WY
